CICA unveils 2024 student essay winners

Butler University students Harrison White and Bailey Sims have received first-place honours and a $2,500 prize after coming first in the 2023-2024 Captive Insurance Companies Association (CICA) College Student Essay Contest Captive Insurance Solutions for Today’s Risk Management Challenges. 

The contest is sponsored by Hylant Global Captive Solutions (Hylant GCS), with the winners announced during the opening session of the CICA 2024 International Conference at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa. 

Second place went to Gracie Law and Sofia Davis of Temple University with a $1,500 prize and third place to Brian Dunn and Rose Gendy of Middle Tennessee State University with a $1,000 prize. 

“It is impressive to see the students’ captive knowledge increase throughout the two rounds of submitting essays for the contest,” said CICA President Dan Towle. “The experience of developing a captive solution helps them see the interesting and unique coverage challenges that captives address and the opportunities to make a difference by helping an organization better manage these risks.”  

Anne Marie Towle, chief executive, global risk & captive solutions, Hylant GCS, said: “The captive insurance industry is dynamic and offers a wide variety of career opportunities. Once the students learn more about captive insurance, they carry that knowledge and interest with them and we hope they will consider working in the captive industry,”  

In addition to cash prizes, the students will present their essays during an education session at the CICA Conference.
