FERMA mourns passing of former president

The Federation of European Risk Management Associations (FERMA) has announced, with great sadness, the death of its former president Jorge Luzzi.

FERMA said that Luzzi’s tenure from 2011 to 2013 left a mark on the organisation and the risk management community as a whole.

“Jorge's dedication to advancing the field of risk management was unparalleled, and his leadership during his presidency was marked by significant achievements that have shaped FERMA's legacy,” said FERMA in a statement. “Under his guidance, FERMA experienced significant milestones, including the expansion of our membership with the inclusion of three new national associations: SI.Risk (Slovenia), ALRiM (Luxembourg), and MARM (Malta). This expansion brought together risk managers from across 20 countries.”

During his presidency, FERMA took many initiatives aimed at professionalising the field of risk management, notably by taking our first steps toward a certification for risk managers, it said. Furthermore, FERMA showed leadership in representing risk management and risk managers with European institutions on critical issues like Solvency II and the revised Insurance Mediation Directive (IMD2).

However, FERMA said, Luzzi’s impact reached far beyond the Federation. His influence spanned continents, leading organisations like IFRIMA and Fundalarys/Alarys, and more recently through his presidency of FERMA’s Portuguese member association, APOGERIS.

FERMA commented that despite his many roles and accomplishments, Luzzi remained approachable and kind-hearted, a true European with a passion for life and a dedication to his fellow risk managers.

“In memory of a visionary leader and with deep respect, I honour the path Jorge Luzzi carved for the European risk management community,” said current FERMA president Charlotte Hedemark. “Jorge’s unwavering dedication to our mission and his exceptional commitment to our collective cause were sources of strength and inspiration for us all. His absence reverberates profoundly within our hearts and our work, but FERMA will continue to build on the foundation of his work, ensuring that his legacy remains alive in our ongoing efforts and dedication.”
