Captive International Cayman Awards: banking specialist

Winner: Conor MacHugh, senior relationship manager, Scotiabank

Highly commended: Martin Ellis, senior vice president, manager, Comerica

Highly commended: Dwight Merren, relationship manager, Butterfield

Conor MacHugh joined the captive insurance team at Scotiabank from an investment broker on-Island five years ago. He has been instrumental in Scotiabank’s success in gaining significant market share—Scotiabank is approaching 350 captive customers, serving their everyday banking, credit, custody and investment needs. Prior to arriving in Cayman, MacHugh worked in the private client division of a large UK-owned bank.

Martin Ellis is responsible for Comerica’s captive insurance clients in leading captive domiciles such as the Cayman Islands, and manager of its Cayman Islands branch. He is a frequent speaker at captive conferences on the topic of collateral for captives and has also produced educational videos about the industry. He has over 30 years’ experience at Comerica, providing a full range of business banking solutions to companies in many different industries, and he has been working exclusively with captives and visiting the Cayman Islands for the last 19 years.

Dwight Merren joined Butterfield in 2014. He has served the captive insurance industry for many years, and was formerly deputy head of insurance supervision at CIMA. He began his career in 1992 with Midland Bank (now HSBC), before joining captive insurance management firm Willis in 1998 as assistant vice president. Later he worked at Global Captive Management as vice president, also acting as HR manager and money-laundering reporting officer.
