US law firm Akerman LLP has hired David Slenn as a partner in its tax practice. He joins after five years with Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, where he was also a partner.

Focusing on tax, estate and business planning issues, Slenn’s an expert on risk management and captive insurance companies. He has advised businesses across industries on setting up and administering captives and assisted with controversial matters in IRS examinations and litigation in US Tax Court. He also serves as the editor and a co-author of the Captive Insurance Deskbook for the Business Lawyer, published by the American Bar Association.

Slenn brings almost 15 years of experience across various firms, including a previous stint with Akerman earlier in his career as a senior associate. He continues to be an advisory committee member of the Cybersecurity for Executives Program at the University of Southern Florida’s MUMA College of Business.

He’ll be based in the firm’s Naples, Florida, office.

“We are jointly building our Naples office and enhancing our ability to serve clients across the country and beyond,” said George Powell, office managing partner. “David is a well-respected lawyer with a track record of success for high net-worth families, businesses and charities in a variety of areas of law.”

“We’ve seen a surge in demand for our services from clients as changing tax laws and new legislation make protecting intergenerational wealth increasingly complex. David’s work as a trusted advisor generally and specifically in areas such as captive insurance companies and tax controversy further strengthens our diverse and national team,” said Peter Larsen, chair of the firm’s Tax Practice Group.
