Risk management departments shake up with high profile moves


Walmart’s senior manager for global risk management is among those to have changed positions over Christmas and the New Year. Brian Sammons, who was with Walmart for more than four years and responsible for placements for its captive, Broadstreet, has taken a position as director of insurance for Digital Realty.

The real estate investment trust focuses on carrier-neutral data centres and provides colocation and peering services. It also has its own captive insurance company, used to partially fund earthquake insurance deductibles.

In the UK, meanwhile, Somto Obi, BT’s former risk and finance senior manager and a member of its captive management sub-committee, has started a new position as group insurance manager at Johnson Mathey.

He joins the speciality chemicals and sustainable technologies after almost two decades with BT.

There has also been a flurry of has promotions. Among them are Jan Virtavuori at Finnish marine and energy specialist Wärtsilä. The Finnish Risk Management Association secretary J has been promoted to director of risk management and insurances. At Luxembourgish satellite and terrestrial telecommunications network provider SES Satellites, meanwhile, Egle Grabun, who joined the firm from Aon in December 2020 as a senior insurance specialist, has been promoted to insurance manager.
