Bailey Roese is a partner at Dentons Bingham Greenebaum, focusing on captive taxation. She practises in federal and state and local tax and has been increasingly involved in captives over the past five or so years.

How did you first become involved in captive insurance?

First through my partner and mentor Chaz Lavelle. I started sitting in on IRS interviews of 831(b) captive owners with Chaz when I started my career, and, inspired by Chaz's passion for captives, have begun to do more with them.

What are the greatest challenges of working in this industry, and what do you find most rewarding?

Ensuring knowledge transfer from the group of captive experts who are nearing retirement age. I find the like-minded, problem-solving attitude of other captive professionals the most rewarding aspect of the industry.

Would you recommend the captive insurance industry to young people as a future career path?

Absolutely! This is such a welcoming industry and there is so much scope for young folks to contribute right away.

What developments do you see ahead for captives?

We will continue to see captives used creatively to solve the ever-evolving problems the insurance industry faces – from climate-related claims to cyber.

Do you think your long-term future remains in the captives market?

Definitely. I really feel like with captives, I've found my true passion and niche.
