New captive insurance counsel joins WBD

Womble Bond Dickinson (WBD) has announced that Douglas Butler has joined the firm as a partner in the corporate & securities group. He will be based in the Atlanta office.

Butler focuses his practice on serving as outside counsel to captive insurance managers and owners, advising on pertinent insurance regulatory matters, including captive insurance company formation, coverage matters, and claims assistance. He also provides regulatory counsel to traditional insurance companies and agencies and serves as outside counsel for general corporate and transactional matters.

“Doug is highly regarded as an excellent lawyer in the captive insurance industry,” said Jamie Francis, leader of the corporate & securities group. “His unique perspective as a former captive manager will be extremely beneficial to our clients in the corporate and securities industry, and we are excited to welcome him to the firm.”

“Adding Doug to our team expands the reach of our practice in both subject matter and geography,” said Jeffrey Simpson, who leads the firm’s captive insurance practice. “He has experience with a variety of regulatory issues in multiple US domiciles. As our practice expands to meet the needs of our clients, Doug is a perfect complement.”

Butler joins Womble from Moore Ingram Johnson & Steele, where he was a partner and led that firm’s captive management and insurance regulatory group. He is the third partner to join the corporate & securities group this year, following regulatory and energy partner Paul Afonso and M&A partner Marcantonio Barnes.
