Weidman steps down from Utah captive division

The Utah Insurance Department (UID) has announced that Mark Wiedeman, assistant director of the Captive Insurance Division, is leaving to take a position as a resident director for Utah domiciled captives and as an independent captive consultant for the industry.

Wiedeman joined the Utah department in 2012 and has held numerous roles of increasing responsibility in the time since.

The UID said that it is very thankful for his diligent work and service to the department during his time and wishes him well in his new ventures.

“I am grateful for the career I’ve developed in captive insurance by working at the department and through my association with my fellow captive regulators,” said Weidman. “It has been an honour to work for both the Department and captive director Travis Wegkamp. The decision to leave was not an easy one, but I look forward to being able support the industry in my new role and for my continued association with regulators and industry leaders.”

The UID also announced that Stephanie Liu will replace Weidman as the new assistant captive director effective September 3rd. Liu has been at the UID since November 2016 as a captive analyst and financial examiner. The UID said it is excited for her to put the same dedication and effort into this new role as she has in her previous one.

“I am honoured to be presented with this opportunity taking over Mark’s role as the assistant director for the Captive Insurance Division,” said Liu. “I have been working closely with the team for the past 6 years and will continue to do so in the many years to come. I am looking forward to the challenge and opportunity of assisting Captive Director Wegkamp to expand Utah’s presence in both the national and international captive insurance industry. We have the most supportive leadership and dedicated staff, and I am proud to be counted among them.”
