IMAC: Cayman gets boost from Q3 2026 numbers

The Insurance Managers Association of Cayman (IMAC) has reported continued growth in the Cayman Islands’ international insurance sector, following the release of the Q3 2026 licensing statistics by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA).

Between July and September 2026, CIMA issued eight new international insurer licenses, comprising of one Class B(i) and seven Class B(iii) licenses, including three new Portfolio Insurance Companies (PICs).

These additions bring the total number of new international insurer licences issued in 2026 to 28, building on the 20 licences approved during the first half of the year. CIMA also advised that a further 11 applications are currently under review, while a number of applications have been approved in principle, which includes one new insurance manager.

With the addition of the latest licensees, Cayman is now home to 720 Class B, C, and D insurance companies, representing approximately $62 billion in premiums written, and $203 billion in total assets. Since the beginning of 2026, premiums written have increased by $11 billion, while total assets have grown by $27 billion.

James Trundle, chair of IMAC, said: “Cayman’s international insurance industry continues to demonstrate resilience, stability and sustained growth. The steady increase in new licensees, alongside significant growth in premiums written and total assets, reflects the continued confidence that international businesses place in our jurisdiction.

“Cayman’s established regulatory framework, depth of industry expertise and strong professional services infrastructure remain key factors in its appeal as one of the world’s leading insurance domiciles. With a healthy pipeline of applications and continued interest from international markets, we are optimistic about the industry's outlook for the remainder of 2026.”

IMAC encourages persons interested in learning more about Cayman’s captive insurance industry to attend the Cayman Captive Forum, the largest captive forum in the world, at the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman, from December 1–3, 2026. With registration nearing capacity, interested delegates are encouraged to secure their places as soon as possible. The full conference agenda and registration details are available here.
