Influential Women in Captive Insurance: Angela Iannetta

Angela Iannetta, Group head of risk & insurance, BAT

Angela Iannetta’s role includes the determination and delivery of BAT’s global insurance strategy and responsibility for the group’s enterprise risk management framework. Iannetta is part of the group’s treasury leadership team and a member of the group’s Sarbanes Oxley Steering Committee and the group’s CSRD Programme Board.

She is the current non-exec chair of Airmic, the UK-based association for risk management and insurance professionals. She is a Chartered Accountant, and prior to joining BAT she was director of group insurance at AstraZeneca and has held roles at Aon (in London and Bermuda) and at KPMG.

How did you get started in the captive insurance industry?

I started in the captive insurance industry as an auditor at KPMG Bermuda in the mid-1990s, then into captive management and then on the corporate side as risk manager for a corporate owner of captives.

Who inspired you or acted as a mentor in your career?

I have had various mentors throughout my career—usually someone with more experience, a different background and/or a different perspective. Mentors should develop how you think about solutions and innovation, so naturally the mentor changes as your own role and career changes and progresses.

What do you think deters people from entering the world of captives?

Lack of awareness of captives and the important role they can have in risk financing strategy. Knowledge of both insurance and finance is required.

How can mentorship and sponsorship programmes be designed to better support the career development of women?

Regardless of gender, I believe that mentorship programmes work best when the mentee is clear on what they seek to achieve through a mentor, and understand that a mentor and a coach are very different.

“Mentorship programmes work best when the mentee is clear on what they seek to achieve through a mentor.”
