Montana votes in new insurance commissioner

James Brown has been elected as Montana’s Commissioner of Securities and Insurance, State Auditor.

He will take up his new position in January 2025.

He replaces Troy Downing, who stood down from the position to run for election to the US House of Representatives. Downing was elected to the position of insurance commissioner in 2020 and took office in 2021

Brown earned a degree in political science and history from the University of Montana at Missoula, a J.D. from Seattle University School of Law in 2004, and a master's degree in tax law from the University of Washington at Seattle in 2005. His career experience includes working as a policy aide, a legislative director, and owning and operating the James Brown Law Office.
