CICA names BevCap’s Lance Abbott as chair

Lance Abbott, the president of BevCap Management and director of BevCap Captive Group, has been named as the next chair of the Captive Insurance Companies Association’s (CICA) board of directors.

Abbott founded BevCap Management in 2008 to manage BevCap Captive Group, a homogeneous group insurance captive for beer distributors. BevCap Management has grown to manage multiple homogenous group captives in multiple domiciles, and founded BevCap Cayman, a heterogenous cell captive for medical stop loss insurance.

He replaces Steve McElhiney, senior vice president and director of reinsurance at Artex Risk Solutions, who was CICA’s previous chair.

The board met this week via conference call in lieu of the in-person meeting normally held after the CICA International Conference, which was cancelled due to COVID-19. The meeting also confirmed Robert “Skip” Myers as vice chair of the CICA board, with Renea Louie becoming secretary and treasurer.

Myers is the managing partner of Morris, Manning and Martin’s office in Washington DC, and is co-chair of the insurance and reinsurance practice. Louie is vice president of Pro Group Captive Management Services.

CICA also appointed Nicholas Hentges, Mary Ellen Moriarty and Erin Hackett to the CICA board for a three year terms.

Hentges is co-chief executive officer of Captive Resources, having started with the firm in 1993. Moriarty is vice president for property and casualty at EIIA and has been actively engaged in the insurance industry for over 30 years. Hackett is senior audit manager at Crowe, and brings ten years of audit experience with commercial insurers, RRGs, alternative insurance companies and insurance agencies and brokers.

Returning CICA board members are: Courtney Claflin, executive director of captive programs in the University of California’s office of the president; Fredrik Finnman, group risk manager at Sandvik Group; Steve McElhiney, senior vice president and director of reinsurance at Artex Risk Solution; Michael Scott, attorney in the law office of Allison & Mosby-Scott; Michael Zuckerman, assistant professor at Temple University; Colin Donovan, president at STICO Mutual Insurance Company, an RRG; and Deyna Feng, a captive manager at Cummins Risk International.

CICA President Dan Towle welcomed all the newcomers to the CICA board. “Their expertise is a strong fit for CICA’s strategic priorities and our commitment to developing the next generation of captive professionals,” he said.
