An unrivalled opportunity

“CRI encourages creativity and collaboration, supports productivity, and promotes colleague interaction and satisfaction.”

Who we are
Headquartered just outside of Chicago, Captive Resources (CRI) is a leading independent consultant to member-owned group captive insurance companies in the US. Since the mid-1980s, CRI has helped create more than 45 group captives with total premiums exceeding $3 billion, currently serving more than 5,400 member companies.Group captive insurance
What is a group captive? A group captive is an insurance company owned and controlled by a group of companies, and which provides insurance only for its owners.Group captives typically comprise mid-size companies. The most common insurance provided by group captives is workers’ compensation, general liability, automobile liability and physical damage, property, and medical stop-loss. Companies choose to join a group captive for a variety of reasons including:

  • Premium reductions and stability;
  • Broader coverage or coverage unavailable in traditional markets;
  • State-of-the-art loss prevention and safety services;
  • Opportunities to earn investment income on unused loss fund dollars; and
  • Dividend potential.

Group captives provide businesses the opportunity to be insurance company owners rather than insurance policy buyers, which means they have greater control over their insurance programmes.What we do
CRI helps mid-size companies form, operate, and develop group captives.We work with commercial insurance agents and brokers to identify companies with the potential to become captive members and educate them about group captives.CRI helps with new captive formation, defining operational structure and captive governance, long-term planning and strategy, selecting and managing service providers, meeting facilitation, and investment management.Diverse career opportunities
Because CRI consults to group captive insurance companies to oversee the captives’ service providers, to facilitate meetings, to help grow the captive, and more, we offer career opportunities across a number of different disciplines—many of the same functional areas in the traditional insurance industry, including:

  • Accounting and finance
  • Programme management
  • Investment management
  • Business development
  • Claims advocacy
  • Risk control/safety
  • Legal
  • Meeting planning/facilitation

Interns
Every year, an amazing group of young interns join us to gain meaningful work experience while they complete their formal education. At the conclusion of their time with us this year, we asked some of them about their experiences.

“I have had the opportunity to work for CRI for the past two summers in the programme management and finance departments. During my time in both programmes, I have felt wholly supported and valued by my colleagues. The firm culture encourages intellectual curiosity and fosters professional and personal growth in its interns. “Overall, the knowledge and skills I have gained through my work here has propelled my success in my undergraduate classrooms, and I am grateful for all that CRI has given me.” Emerson Cilley, junior at University of Virginia, double major in marketing and management with a minor in business analytics (eic2pdf@virginia.edu)

Courtney Callahan

“I thoroughly enjoyed my summer internship at CRI. Captive Resources provided me with the opportunity to grow personally and professionally by working on a multitude of hands-on projects, and shadowing impressive colleagues on a daily basis. I have never worked at a company who cared about their colleagues (especially interns) as much as CRI. I am extremely grateful to have spent my time with them and wish them the best in all future endeavours.” Courtney Callahan, junior at The University of Alabama, majoring in finance and Spanish (cncallahan@crimson.ua.edu)

“After interning in the programme management department at Captive Resources for two summers, I was able to learn so much about such an interesting niche of the insurance industry. Having projects that allowed me to take initiative and work alongside colleagues in many departments gave me a greater understanding of captive insurance and a more holistic view of CRI. “The internship programme taught me a considerable amount—from the type of company culture I’d like to surround myself with, to the type of work I’d like to succeed in doing.” Taylor Mishler, senior at Illinois State University, majoring in international business and risk management & insurance (tjmishl@ilstu.edu)

Michael Chinn

“My internship with Captive Resources has allowed me to obtain a greater understanding of the insurance industry through hands-on experience. Throughout the summer, I had the opportunity to work on the medical stop-loss team with programme management and the business development team. “At CRI, I was able to grow as a professional by sharpening my critical thinking and communication skills from working on prospecting assignments, new business submissions, public speaking practice, and collaborating with my fellow teammates. One of my favourite things about working at Captive Resources is the strong company culture. The supportive environment helped me learn faster, gain confidence and have fun throughout the summer. I would recommend the programme to any college student who wants to invest in themselves and develop long-term professional skills.” Michael Chinn, recent graduate of Butler University, majored in risk management and entrepreneurship and innovation (mchinn@captiveresources.com)
