How captives can deliver consistency in an uncertain world
Matt Takamine (pictured) reflects on a key ingredient that lies at the heart of Brown & Brown’s multiple successes.
This year, Brown & Brown was honored to be recognised by Captive Review as Captive manager of the year for organisations managing more than $1 bn in premiums for the third consecutive year. While we are incredibly proud of this recognition, what stands out is not the award itself, but rather what it represents.
We operate in a world defined by uncertainty. Organisations today face a growing array of challenges, including evolving liability exposures and cyber threats, workforce issues, healthcare costs, supply chain disruptions and economic volatility. Through it all, captives have continued to prove their value as strategic risk financing tools that help organisations navigate complexity and build resilience.
In an environment where so much is changing, one thing remains constant: the importance of trust.
Organisations place extraordinary trust in their risk advisers. They rely on us to help them navigate difficult decisions, solve complex problems and protect the organisations they lead. Earning that trust requires more than technical knowledge. It requires consistency – showing up every day with professionalism, integrity and a relentless focus on customer outcomes.
That is what this recognition celebrates.
Winning an award once can be the result of a great year. Winning twice might suggest momentum. Earning this recognition for a third consecutive year speaks to something deeper: a culture committed to excellence and a team that consistently delivers for its customers.
“Consistency matters. It is earned over time, strengthened through relationships and demonstrated through action.”
Year of recognition across the board
I am especially proud of the people behind this achievement. Across North America, our teammates bring diverse perspectives, specialised insights and an unwavering commitment to customer service. Over the past year, we have grown even stronger through the addition of our teammates from Risk Management Advisors. Together, we have expanded our capabilities, deepened our technical resources and enhanced our ability to help a wide variety of customers address increasingly sophisticated risk challenges.
That strength was reflected throughout this year’s awards programme.
In addition to Brown & Brown being recognised as Captive manager of the year, the Risk Management Advisors team was honoured as Captive manager of the year in the category for organisations managing less than $1 bn in premium. Seeing our combined team recognised on the industry’s largest stage was a powerful reminder that exceptional customer service, industry knowledge and strong relationships remain at the heart of successful captive programmes.
We were also honored to receive the award for Excellence in captive broking services and be recognised as highly commended in the Captive consulting firm category for the second consecutive year. In an increasingly competitive field, these recognitions reflect the depth of experience and collaborative approach that our teammates bring to customers across the captive lifecycle.
Awards are gratifying, but what I find most rewarding is seeing our customers succeed. One of our clients, Marc Bentley of IHG Hotels and Resorts, was recognised as Captive risk manager of the year during this year’s ceremony. Seeing customers receive the recognition they deserve is a reminder that the most meaningful measure of our success is that of the organisations we serve.
What consistency actually requires
As I reflect on this year’s awards, I am reminded that none of these accomplishments happens in isolation. They are the result of trusted customer relationships, talented teammates, supportive regulators and a captive industry that continues to innovate and evolve.
The captive industry’s future has never been brighter. As organisations search for more sophisticated ways to finance risk, manage volatility and support strategic objectives, captives will continue to play an increasingly important role. Brown & Brown remains committed to investing in our people, expanding our capabilities and helping our customers realise the full potential of their captive programmes.
Looking ahead
Three consecutive years of recognition are certainly worth celebrating, but I believe they ultimately reflect something more important: the trust our customers place in us and the consistency with which our teammates honour that trust.
In an uncertain world, consistency matters. It is earned over time, strengthened through relationships and demonstrated through action. For that trust, and for the opportunity to serve such outstanding organisations, we remain deeply grateful.
