Influential Women in Captive Insurance: Tina Truax McCuin
Tina Truax McCuin, Regional captive manager/institutional relationship manager, TD Wealth
As a TD Wealth private client regional captive manager, Tina Truax McCuin provides captive insurance clients with TD Wealth’s full suite of investment offerings, including professional portfolio management, portfolio guidance and brokerage services in the TD Wealth Captive Specialty Practice.
Through a team-based, consultative approach, she works closely with each client to identify their investment objectives and implement solutions to help them develop financial strategies. She leverages the resources of TD Wealth and TD Bank to assemble a team of specialists to identify the needs of each captive client. As the primary point of contact, she develops an extensive relationship with each captive and works closely with the team assembled to provide a holistic approach.
She joined TD Wealth in 1990 and has held the lead role in the captive specialty practice for over three decades. She is a graduate of the University of Vermont and a graduate of St. Michael’s College with an MSA. She holds her FINRA Series 7 and 66 registrations and the Associate in Captive Insurance.
She is actively involved in the industry where she serves on boards and committees for captives and captive trade associations.
How did you get started in the captive insurance industry?
Over three decades, TD Wealth’s head of investments and trusts provided me with the opportunity to lead the business development efforts of our captive specialty practice. I am extremely proud of the growth and strong business partnerships we have fostered over the years.
It is important to me to dedicate time and support to the industry in addition to growing our captive specialty practice.
Who inspired you or acted as a mentor in your career?
Lisa Ventriss was president of the Vermont Captive Insurance Association when I started my career in the captive insurance industry. We developed a strong working relationship, and I admired her leadership qualities. She was an inspiration and mentor to me. In addition to Lisa, I have other business partners who continue to inspire me every day.
“The captives community has done excellent work to remove barriers and attract young professionals.”
What do you think deters people from entering the world of captives?
The captives community has done excellent work to remove barriers and attract young professionals through various mentorship, networking and professional development opportunities. This is complemented by the world-class education and designation programmes offered through the International Center for Captive Insurance Education.
How can mentorship and sponsorship programmes be designed to better support the career development of women?
This is an area of focus in the industry. Several initiatives exist that support this effort. The captive insurance industry provides some of the best support through the leadership teams of captives, risk retention groups and service providers.
In what ways can companies in the sector create a more inclusive culture that actively promotes gender diversity at all levels?
This is also an area of focus that is important to professionals in our industry. It starts with each captive, risk retention group, employer and employee embodying the principles of inclusivity.
What challenges are gender-specific to women in the captives industry?
I have not found any challenges that are gender-specific to women in the sector. Our male colleagues are extremely supportive of women. They are on the front lines of initiatives that continue to raise women up in this industry.
What are your ambitions?
I am excited about TD Wealth’s level of participation in an industry that I am very proud to support. I am very appreciative of the friendships and business partnerships that have developed over my career. I have so many individuals to thank for supporting me as I continue this journey.
