FORTY under 40: Alicia Miller
Alicia Miller, senior tax manager, Crowe
Alicia Miller began her career in tax advisory and quickly developed a specialisation in insurance tax, focusing on the captive insurance sector since 2013. She now serves as a senior tax manager at Crowe LLP, where she leads client services for many of its multinational and international captive insurance clients. Her role encompasses a wide range of tax-related services, including consulting, compliance and navigating international tax complexities.
How did you first become involved in captive insurance?
I first became involved in captive insurance in 2013 when I began specialising in insurance tax. During this time, I had the opportunity to work with clients who integrated captive insurance structures into their broader risk management strategies. What attracted me to the industry was its complexity and adaptability – each captive is uniquely designed to meet a company's specific needs, making the field both dynamic and ever-evolving. I also credit my introduction to the captive space to my colleague and mentor, Daniel Kusaila. Having worked with Daniel throughout my career, his expertise and passion for the industry have been a significant influence on my professional growth.
Introducing new hires to the industry allows me to share my specialised knowledge while mentoring the next generation of professionals
What are the greatest challenges of working in this industry, and what do you find most rewarding?
Like any profession, the captive insurance industry is constantly evolving, making adaptability essential. Throughout my career, I have navigated numerous changes in tax laws, emphasising the importance of staying ahead of new developments. I have actively contributed to industry growth and client education by serving as an instructor for ICCIE, speaking at industry events and conducting tailored training sessions for clients.
However, one of the greatest challenges we face today is the industry-wide talent shortage. While this presents obstacles, I also see it as an opportunity. I am deeply passionate about the growth and development of our insurance tax practice at Crowe. Introducing new hires to the captive insurance industry allows me to share my specialised knowledge while mentoring the next generation of professionals. Contributing to their growth and helping shape the future leaders of our industry is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.
Would you recommend the captive insurance industry to young people as a future career path?
Yes, the captive insurance industry offers a wide range of expertise and abundant opportunities for professional growth. It is a dynamic and evolving field that enables individuals to develop specialised skills while exploring diverse career paths. The industry also fosters a strong sense of community, encouraging collaboration, knowledge-sharing and continuous development. Another key aspect is that captives intersect with every industry. While our focus is on how captives benefit companies, we gain insights from all sectors, making the work both creative and exciting.
What developments do you see ahead for captives?
The captive insurance landscape continues to evolve, with regulatory changes, tax scrutiny and new risk exposures shaping the future. One of the key developments I see is the growing use of captives to manage emerging risks. As traditional insurance markets become more volatile, more businesses are looking to captives for stability and control over their risk management strategies. This creates significant opportunities within the captive space and I’m looking forward to what the future holds for our industry.
Do you think your long-term future remains in the captives market?
Yes, I have dedicated the past 13 years to the captive insurance industry, building meaningful relationships with fellow professionals along the way. Over time, this industry has become more than just a career – it feels like home. I am deeply committed to the captive space and plan to continue growing and contributing to this field for the rest of my professional life.
