Gallagher Re highlights AI as impacting APAC insurers
Artificial intelligence, international expansion and abundant reinsurance capital are among the forces reshaping the Asia Pacific insurance market, creating new opportunities for insurers across one of the world's fastest-growing regions, according to Gallagher Re's latest APAC Market Watch report.
The report finds that Asia Pacific continues to offer one of the most compelling long-term growth opportunities for the global insurance industry. Across the 14 markets analysed, GDP growth averaged 4.4% in 2025, significantly higher than the global average of 2.9%, while emerging markets expanded by 5.3%. Strong economic growth, rising asset values and increasing demand for protection continue to support the region's insurance sector.
Despite rapid economic development, substantial protection gaps remain across many markets. Non-life insurance penetration stands at just 1.1% across Emerging Asia, compared with 2.3% in Mature Asia, underscoring the significant opportunity for insurers to support economic development, infrastructure investment and growing risk transfer needs in the years ahead.
Beyond these underlying growth fundamentals, the report highlights significant opportunities emerging from the region's ongoing transformation. Rapid infrastructure development, increasing investment in renewable energy and energy transition projects, growing adoption of electric vehicles and continued digitalisation are creating demand for new insurance solutions across property, construction, engineering, liability and specialty lines. These trends are expanding the role insurers play in supporting economic development while opening attractive new avenues for growth.
Insurers are also increasingly pursuing growth through international expansion and specialisation. As domestic markets mature, many carriers are seeking to diversify earnings through cross-border expansion, specialty insurance products and reinsurance operations, reflecting a broader shift toward more diversified and capital-efficient business models.
Among the most significant emerging trends identified in the report is the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence and the infrastructure supporting it. Growing investment in data centres, semiconductors, digital networks and advanced manufacturing facilities is generating demand across property, engineering, cyber and specialty insurance lines, while creating new underwriting opportunities for insurers throughout the region.
At the same time, wider adoption of AI is introducing new risk considerations for businesses and insurers alike. Potential exposures relating to cybersecurity, intellectual property, privacy, professional liability and automated decision-making are prompting insurers to evaluate how existing products respond and where new forms of coverage may be required. These trends are expected to drive demand for new insurance products and specialist risk transfer solutions.
The report also highlights the growing strategic flexibility available to insurers as strong reinsurer profitability and abundant global capital continue to support favourable market conditions for buyers. Increased reinsurance capacity is enabling insurers to optimise program structures, improve capital efficiency and pursue growth opportunities with greater confidence.
As a result, insurers across Asia Pacific are increasingly exploring opportunities to diversify earnings, expand into new markets and develop expertise in higher-growth specialty sectors. Gallagher Re expects these trends to remain important drivers of market development across the region in the years ahead.
Roshan Perera, chief executive, Asia Pacific, Gallagher Re, said: “Asia Pacific remains one of the most compelling long-term growth markets for the global insurance industry. Strong economic growth, low insurance penetration across many markets and increasing investment in infrastructure, technology and energy transition initiatives are creating substantial opportunities for insurers throughout the region.
“What is particularly notable is the breadth of opportunities available across Asia Pacific. We are seeing growth driven by infrastructure development, renewable energy investment, electric vehicle adoption, international expansion, specialty insurance and emerging technology risks.
“At the same time, strong balance sheets and abundant reinsurance capacity are giving insurers more strategic flexibility than they have had in recent years. Organisations that can combine underwriting discipline with innovation will be best positioned to capitalise on the next phase of growth across Asia Pacific.”
