Canopius appoints new group chairman

Canopius has announced it has appointed Andy Haste as its new group chairman with effect from July 1st 2024.

The company said that Haste brings a wealth of executive and non-executive experience to the role. He will assume responsibility for chairing the Group Board as Canopius embarks on realising its future ambition, following its record 2023 results.

Haste has deep insurance expertise, Canopius said; his former roles include group chief executive of RSA Insurance Group, and chief executive at AxA Sun Life, as well as serving as senior independent director and deputy chairman of Lloyd’s for nine years, between 2012 and 2021. He also currently chairs the board of Esure Group PLC which he has done since March 2020.

The appointment of a new Chairman comes after what Canopius said was a record year for the company in 2023, with the business demonstrating growth and profitability across all three business regions – the UK, US & Bermuda and APAC. It posted profits after tax of $363 million, and a 22% increase in insurance contract written premium to $2.80 billion.

Haste will take over from current Canopius group chairman Michael Watson, who will stand down but continue to support Canopius in an advisory capacity.

Haste commented: “I am honoured to join Canopius as its Group Chair and excited to work closely with Neil and his management team, as well as my fellow Board members on the next stage of Canopius’ journey. I would like to thank Michael for his service to Canopius over many years and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”
