New captive insurance division head at North Carolina
Lori Gorman has been appointed as the new deputy commissioner of the captive insurance company division at the North Carolina Department of Insurance (DOI), beginning in April. Gorman has been with the DOI for 15 years and is assistant chief financial analyst with its Company Service Group’s financial analysis section.
In her current role, she assists with monitoring the financial solvency of North Carolina’s 90 domestic and more than 1,400 foreign licensed insurers. She also serves as a representative for the department on a working group with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
Before joining the DOI, Gorman worked in public accounting and the insurance industry, including serving as the director of internal audit with the former Durham Life Insurance Co.
“Lori has an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the financial oversight that will complement the Captive Insurance Company Division,” said North Carolina insurance commissioner Mike Causey. “Her calm and personable demeanour will be an asset to the Department and the industry.”
Gorman succeeds Debbie Walker, who led the program from its inception in 2013 and is retiring. Jackie Obusek, senior deputy commissioner of the Company Services Group, will assume senior leadership responsibilities over the Captive Insurance Company Division alongside her other duties.
