New general counsel at North Carolina regulator

Amy Funderburk has been appointed to the role of general counsel at the North Carolina Department of Insurance, effective immediately.

“Amy is a highly experienced and dedicated public servant who brings a wealth of knowledge in government to this highly important position,” North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey said. “I am very confident that Amy will bring the same level of service and commitment to the department.”

Funderburk grew up in eastern North Carolina and holds both a Bachelor of Science in Child Development and Family Relations and a Master’s Degree in Education from East Carolina University. She received her law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. Her previous North Carolina state government experience includes work as deputy counsel for the Administrative Office of the Courts, as the Clerk of Court for the NC Supreme Court, and as an assistant attorney general at the NC Department of Justice.

Her most recent role was as corporate secretary and senior counsel for the North Carolina State Employees' Credit Union.

Additionally, Funderburk has served as an adjunct professor at Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law and is chair of the Foundation Board of the Raleigh Kiwanis Club.

Funderburk succeeds John Hoomani, whom Commissioner Causey named as the department’s chief operating officer in January.
