New policy/regulation director at ABIR

The Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers (ABIR) has announced the appointment of Bermudian Collin Anderson as its director of policy and regulation, effective July 1.

Anderson brings 23 years of experience in the public and private sectors, including regulatory and supervisory work at the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA), leadership roles with the Government of Bermuda, and insurance industry roles.

Anderson will spearhead ABIR’s work representing the public policy interests of Bermuda international insurers and reinsurers that protect consumers around the world. He will lead ABIR’s public outreach agenda, research international public policy and insurance regulation developments, manage ABIR’s Hamilton office and serve as ABIR’s corporate secretary. He will report to John Huff, ABIR’s chief executive.

Most recently Anderson served as a consultant to the Government of Bermuda on various projects over the past year, with a primary focus on coordinating the project team to implement Bermuda’s Corporate Income Tax (CIT) for the Ministry of Finance. His work on the execution of the new regime included policy, legislative, operations, communications, and financial matters.

During nearly five years with the BMA, Anderson served as lead supervisor for several Bermuda insurance groups, handled companies under close monitoring, and engaged with international regulatory bodies. Most recently at the BMA, he served as deputy director of strategy & international affairs.

His leadership experience during 12 years with the Government of Bermuda included tenures as a Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Economy and Labour, and Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of National Security. Anderson was also the founding Director of the Health Insurance Department in the Ministry of Health.

Before joining the Government of Bermuda, Anderson worked in various roles in the insurance industry in New York, Bermuda, Washington DC and London, including positions with the ACE Group of Companies (now Chubb).

“Collin’s broad experience, encompassing public policy, regulation, legislation, executive management, property and casualty insurance and international affairs, makes him a perfect fit for this role,” said Huff. “I am confident he will be a great asset to ABIR, as we continue to represent the public policy interests of Bermuda’s international insurers and reinsurers. We’re pleased to welcome Collin on board.”

Pina Albo, chair of ABIR and chief executive of Hamilton, added: “Collin’s high level of technical and leadership skills, and his experience of public and private sectors, equip him well to serve our members. It speaks to the depth of talent we have in Bermuda that we were able to recruit such an ideal candidate locally.”
